I’m registering the domain name now as I am pretty sure life will take me back to San Sebastian soon.
Alex and I spent 5 days in the Basque region recently and could not have loved a city more. Everything about it was perfect. The food goes without saying, pintxos and seafood at every corner, and even if you’re like us and not too fussed about Michelin stars, most restaurants have amazing daily & tasting menus that are cheap (£20) and better than almost anything in London.
While we were there it rained almost every day. That did not stop the people of San Sebastian from running, surfing, walking, cycling, and generally being outside. On a few of the heavier downpours they retreated into a bar for a sneaky glass of wine, but other than that they were outside with no complaints.
We booked a pretty amazing apartment right on Zurriola beach, and while I wouldn’t 100% recommend it (the company was a bit dodgy and we had some issues with checking in on time) but if you like a laid back apartment with stunning views then go for it.
I snuck in a quick 1 mile beach run (and subsequent ocean ice bath) on the first day we were there and we hiked up the hill in the middle of town for some great views (even in one of the above mentioned downpours too!)
We spent a day surfing which unfortunately twinged an already delicate knee so I was assigned to strict rest for the rest of the weekend, which on a beach isn’t so bad, if you don’t mind strange tan lines.
After surfing all day we stumbled on a Europop concert and evening Operetta in the old town which was nice to enjoy while digesting our pintxos and 3 course dinner (choose one or the other, not us)
Get out there and book your flight now. Or grab some shoes and walk there.
